On Wednesday, fans of the popular movie "Mean Girls" were treated to the official trailer of the highly anticipated musical adaptation.
The trailer, released by Paramount Pictures, offers a sneak peek into what promises to be a lively and dazzling production, with catchy tunes, impressive choreography, and all the familiar characters from the beloved original film.
Tina Fey announced plans for a movie directed by Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne in January 2020. The official casting list was revealed in December 2022. A teaser of the film was shown at Taylor Swift's concert movie, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" making it more evident to viewers that the movie was a musical.
Most of the cast in the new "Mean Girls" movie consists of actors new to the franchise, but Fey returns as Ms. Norbury. Fey also wrote the screenplay as she did for the original film. Reneé Rapp portrays the character of Regina George, while Ashley Park plays Gretchen Weiners. Busy Phillips takes on the role of the disorganized mother.
Coach Carr was also seen in the trailer, played by Jon Hamm. The new "Mean Girls" movie trailer suggests it's not entirely the same as the original. However, it still includes some of the key moments, such as the "Jingle Bell Rock" dance and the pink "Burn Book" filled with rumors about North Shore High School students.
The upcoming movie is scheduled to release in theaters Jan. 12.

What is the plot of 'Mean Girls'?
The film released in 2004, was adapted from Rosalind Wiseman's self-help book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," becoming an instant hit and grossing $121 million at the worldwide box office. Wiseman collaborated with Fey in writing the screenplay, and Fey played a teacher in the movie as well.
The 2004 movie featured Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a new student who had moved from Africa and struggled to fit in at her high school. She soon learned about the social hierarchy and met the popular girls: Karen Smith (played by Seyfried), Gretchen Wieners (played by Chabert), and their leader Regina George (played by McAdams). The trio was known as The Plastics, and their reputation preceded them.

Why is the movie popular?
Research suggests that people tend to admire individuals who exhibit qualities similar to those of Regina George from the movie "Mean Girls". In fact, a recent study has found that both men and women prefer it when their friends are aggressive towards their enemies.
The research, which was published in Elsevier's Evolution and Human Behavior, states that the advantages of friendship are linked to how much our friends value us relative to others. Consequently, the way a friend behaves toward others can impact our own outcomes.
The movie also has some iconic catchphrases that people still say today, like "On Wednesdays, we wear pink", "Get in loser, we're going shopping", and "Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen." These phrases have been widely quoted and cited, even after nearly two decades.
